AANAN “LAW” WOODS

I had hoped to spend that Thanksgiving eating a spread at Ma’s dinner table. Yet, unfortunately, my family was spending it saying our goodbyes to Jeezy.

Time had run out. There was nothing else that the doctors could do for him. He was now in septic shock, and it was time to pull the plug.

I was sitting next to Ma, holding her hand as she held Jeezy’s with the other. Shay was behind me with her arm around Reese. We had left the kids with a sitter.

As I heard tears being shed around me, I wished that I was as sorrowful of his death so that I wouldn’t look so cold. However, I had no tears for Jeezy. He had been an asshole his whole life and wreaked havoc in Ma’s life. He’d caused her more headaches than pride. So, as I sat there comforting her, I felt relief for her that she could finally stop worrying about what he would do next to stress her out. She no longer had to worry if he would die in the streets or be locked away for the rest of his life. She could have comfort in knowing that he would die peacefully with his loved ones.

“I love you, Jeezy,” she whimpered. “I love you so much.”

I flinched, hearing the heartbreak in her words. I switched hands that held hers so that I could put my arm around her.

Heavy footsteps entered the room, making us all cringe. We peered up at the doctor with hesitation.

Pressing his lips together in a thin regretful line, he said, “It’s time. Are you ready?”

My mother began to sob, weeping out loud, her body doubling over.

Reese’s sighing could be heard behind me.

So, I spoke up. “We’re ready.”

Ma clung to my hand so tightly as the doctor inched towards the machines that were keeping him alive.

“First, I’m going to disconnect the supportive medication. But I will continue the meds that keep him comfortable. Then I’m going to disconnect the vent, and he will be gone.” The doctor then began to slowly move about the room, turning off the machines that were helping Jeezy live.

Ma’s body was trembling as she rocked back and forth. I cringed every time she wept and felt useless. I had always protected her from everything. But this I couldn’t shield her from. Only time could heal her, and even then, she would never be the same.
